Review:
John Hawkes continues to amaze with its chameleon-like embodiment of unusual characters. This time, he plays Mark Obrien, 36-year-old polio victim who spent his life in a horizontal position in the iron lung. Based on a true story, a romantic poet and OBrien, never had sexual experience. After consulting with a priest (William H. Macy perfectly embodies the father of radical Berkeley), he contacted a therapist and hooks with sexual surrogates, Helen Hunt. Their meetings on the tender heart of the film, and take the audience on a journey and self-discovery and Marc. Hawkes is just amazing. He infuses the character with innocence, optimism and wry humor into what can only be described as a journey of sheer performance. Hunt is also trained in their role, together expertise, fun, sensuality and compassion in a series of meetings that require full nudity. Both actors are brave in their search for truth and humanity, and to achieve Oscar-quality performances, thanks to the sensitive direction of writer / director Ben Lewin.
